I had the privilege to undertake a healthcare internship in Kosovo. This internship provided me with a remarkable opportunity to gain practical experience in a real hospital environment. The primary objective of my internship was to gain insights into hospital operations and understand the challenges faced in healthcare in Kosovo.
I started at the general hospital in Mitrovica and was assigned to the surgery department during my internship. It was a valuable opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a specialized area. One of the most heartening aspects of my experience was the inclusivity and camaraderie that permeated the workplace. I was invited to participate in team meetings and join in on lunch breaks, fostering a sense of belonging that went beyond the scope of my internship dutie. Throughout the internship, I had the chance to observe and assist in various medical procedures, such as assisting in operations, talking to patients or cleaning wounds. I also had the opportunity to spend a day at the outpatient clinic. These experiences provided insights into patient care, diagnostics, and treatment methods.
I was also able to collaborate with experienced medical professionals who generously shared their expertise. This interaction expanded my understanding of medical practices and ethics. The internship reinforced the importance of patient-centered care and compassion. Witnessing the resilience of patients and their trust in healthcare professionals was a humbling experience. One of the most significant aspects of my internship was my exposure to challenging cases, particularly those involving carcinoma. The surgeons graciously allowed me to be part of their team. I observed how they approached the diagnosis, treatment planning, and the surgeries themselves with meticulous care and precision.
I am immensely grateful to the surgeons and the entire surgical team. Their willingness to include me, share their knowledge, and offer guidance was a privilege and expanded my understanding of surgical procedures.
I extended my internship and subsequently started the second part at the Children’s hospital in Pristina. The hospital is equipped with various departments, each specializing in different aspects of pediatric care. I was assigned to the ICU and had the opportunity to observe and interact with a diverse range of patients who presented with various medical conditions. I must emphasize that, once again, I was warmly welcomed into this new healthcare environment. It was truly remarkable to witness the familiarity and strong bonds between the doctors and their patients. The sense of community and trust that existed within the hospital was palpable, and I felt fortunate to be part of such a welcoming and close-knit medical team. I was fortunate to work closely with assistant doctors and engage in educational courses alongside them.
In the second week of my internship, a remarkable opportunity unfolded as a group of dedicated doctors from Turkey visited the Children's Hospital in Pristina. Their mission was to perform heart surgeries on children in need. Being part of this experience was both eye-opening and enriching. The arrival of the Turkish medical team brought a sense of international collaboration to the hospital. Their expertise and commitment to helping children with complex medical conditions were truly commendable. I had the privilege of assisting in the post-operative care and thus witnessed the positive impact that medical professionals can make on the lives of those in need. The exchange of knowledge, ideas, and experiences between the visiting doctors and the local medical staff was invaluable. This phase of my internship highlighted the universal commitment of medical professionals to the well-being of children, regardless of borders. My involvement with the Turkish medical team was a profound and enlightening experience that will continue to influence my future.
My internship in Kosovo was a transformative experience that deepened my understanding of healthcare. It allowed me to witness the challenges and rewards of working in a hospital setting in Kosovo. I learned valuable lessons about patient care, communication, and professionalism, which will undoubtedly shape my future career as a doctor. My experience has solidified my passion for healthcare and I aim to return to Kosovo to contribute to its healthcare system in the future. I would like to express my gratitude to the entire team at both hospitals for their guidance, support, and for making my internship a valuable and enriching experience.
